SK powertech focuses on designing and manufacturing semiconductor materials to provide support for equIPMent needed for power supply. SKpowertech uses SIC power semiconductor technology, which exhibits superior performance compared to traditional silicon-based power semiconductors. The company name "SKpowertech" is a combination of "power", "electricity", and "technology", representing the core values and professional fields of the company.
SiC power semiconductor is a cutting-edge material that has attracted global attention and can improve the efficiency of electric vehicle batteries by about 7%. In order to further expand its business, SKInc. invested approximately 150 billion Korean won twice in 2021 and 2022, and successfully acquired the operating rights of SKpowertech. This acquisition has built a complete value chain from SiC production to SiC power semiconductor design and manufacturing for the first time in South Korea. This measure further consolidates SKpowertech's leading position in the semiconductor industry and lays a solid foundation for the company's future development.
SKPowertech is a supplier of compact silicon carbide power devices, specializing in high pressure/high temperature applications and serving growing end markets such as electric vehicles, railways, and alternative energy. SKPowertech's products are very suitable for smaller and lighter packaging applications that require high voltage/high temperature requirements.
Babak Taheri, CEO of Silvaco Group, said, "The expanding power management market in areas such as solar energy, automotive, industrial applications, and embedded computers is driving the widespread application of SiC power devices." He pointed out that "SKPowertech's success has demonstrated the advantages of using SilvacoVictoriyTCAD solutions for power device development. This solution helps to develop advanced semiconductor products, drive innovation and development in this field."
Eric Guichard, Senior Vice President of Silvaco and General Manager of TCAD Business Unit, said, "Our VictoryTCAD solution has been recognized for its simulation and analysis capabilities in the semiconductor industry and widely used in the SiC power device market. By using Silvaco's TCAD solution, SKPowertech can make significant progress in SiC power device technology and contribute to its application in various industries."
In order to increase its visibility in the global market, SKpowertech has decided to relocate its factory located in Pohang to Busan and upgrade its equipment. Recently, the new factory located in Jizhang County, Busan has completed trial operation and officially started large-scale production. As of the fourth quarter, the company's goal is to triple the production scale of SiC power semiconductors through factory optimization. It is expected that SiC power semiconductors will be widely used in most electric vehicles after 2025, so SKpowertech is expected to achieve sustained growth.
